'A Real Cliff-Hanger … For Both Teams!' by manager J. Tonight's match follows a 6-1 defeat in the first leg at Ibrox and leaves no option but to take the game to Rangers and make every effort to retrieve the situation: 'We know full well that it is an almost impossible task, but we shall not admit to defeat until the very end of the 90 minutes.' He was proud of the way the players played at Ibrox on the Saturday and feels that had Chic McLelland not been ordered off so early in the match they might well have had at least a point to take away. 'Fergie': time has flashed by to bring Aberdeen into the penultimate stage of the competition, and a cordial welcome is extended to the Belgian side; it hardly seems three weeks since that night to remember against Bayern Munich. Pulling on their European cloak again, Aberdeen get away from the demands of the domestic programme — though plenty think it is escaping soccer pressures, it is good for the team to get this kind of opportunity and different responsibility. The size of the task, as the surviving British club side in any European competition, will not be under-estimated: the visitors may not be among the best known teams in Europe but are a comprehensive squad, technically sound, who qualified on a 3-2 aggregate over Paris Saint-Germain — 'any team capable of beating the French side is certainly one that requires the utmost respect'. Their manager is a clever guiding hand who has brought them virtually from nothing to rate highly in the Belgian League. It would be tempting fate to expect another thriller like Bayern Munich, but every fan should remember it is a two-game affair. Attentions then turn to Saturday's league fixture at Ibrox against Rangers, then Celtic at Hampden in the Scottish Cup semi-final — 'which must make this month's programme for Aberdeen the most crucial on record'. Official matchday magazine, 50p. Alex Ferguson's column is a remarkable document. Looking back to the 3-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox the previous Saturday, 'I can only say in all honesty that I have never been so pleased in my whole career to see a match end and get on the way back home. That reaction has nothing to do with the scoreline.' He had a genuine fear for people's safety as the widely-publicised problems developed, and it was a relief to get it all over and behind us; he has no intention of being drawn into controversy or of replying to the comments made afterwards by Jock Wallace, preferring to concentrate on the impressive set of results being put together. Once the first goal came through Alex McLeish's header after about half an hour they were never going to let go; a second by Billy Stark more or less settled it, and although a third came through John Hewitt in the second half they had almost stopped playing by then because of the pitch invasion. The best display of the season was perhaps the 1-0 win over Dundee United in the Skol Cup. Points dropped at home to Motherwell and St Mirren should be motivation enough to get attention back on the defence of the Premier Division title before the midweek switch to the European scene. The issue carries an obituary of **Chris Anderson OBE**, the Pittodrie vice-chairman, who had died after months of suffering; supporters, staff, players and former boardroom colleagues send sympathy to his family, and tribute is paid to his wisdom, vision and caring approach as an administrator — the game in Scotland having lost two figures of major importance in Jock Stein and Chris Anderson. Alex Ferguson's column: the new season always arrives in a rush, more so this year, with Scotland's World Cup involvement stretching last season into June and a squad trip to Sweden squeezed in. Stuttgart, with numerous international-class players, are one of West Germany's powerful club sides and also in the Cup-Winners' Cup, so today could be a preview of a far more important meeting. This is the issue in which **Aberdeen FC extend a warm Pittodrie welcome to new manager Ian Porterfield, who succeeded Alex Ferguson the previous Wednesday** — formerly a well-respected wing half for Raith Rovers, Reading, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday, scorer of the winning goal for the Roker Park club against Leeds in the 1973 FA Cup Final, and subsequently manager of Rotherham United and Sheffield United, whom he took to the championships of the Fourth and Third Divisions in successive seasons. No manager is listed in the club directory of this issue, caught between the two appointments. 'Dons v Rangers': fixtures between the new firm and the old firm always raise the pulse rate at Pittodrie. There is a score to settle after the 2-0 defeat at Ibrox in September watched by a crowd of more than 40,000; the Glasgow club has been pepped up by the arrival of Graeme Souness, but that fact merely serves to motivate the Dons. The front cover pictures Peter Weir — 'best known for the accuracy of his crosses like the one Alan Rough mishandled for the goal against Hibs; however he can be a bit useful with a throw-in as the front cover picture shows'. Ian Porterfield's column: the Christmas period is one of the most crucial spells of the season and it is imperative not to slip back — Hamilton today, then Dundee on New Year's Day and St Mirren two days later, a trio of fixtures from which nothing less than maximum points must be taken. You only get out of football what you put in, and beating lower-division teams has to be earned. The victory over Hibs at Pittodrie was satisfactory even though it took a late goal by Billy Stark. Twelve points from the last seven games, with only one goal conceded in that spell, lifted the side to fifth before meeting Celtic; he is a great believer in a settled side, but everything in football has to be earned. The front cover panel reads: thirteen Premier League games without defeat, just four goals conceded, the Tennents Sixes champions and a manager-of-the-month award — 'it hasn't been a bad start for Ian Porterfield has it?' Porterfield's column on the 2-2 Scottish Cup draw with Celtic: mixed feelings — a commendable fight back from two down, but not one of the better displays. Conditions were extremely difficult, the ground carrying a lot of frost with a white covering; in different circumstances some referees would have postponed the game, though the live television cameras and the possibility of conditions easing were factors, and he did not envy the referee having to decide at 9am. Jim Leighton slipped on the treacherous surface for the first goal, telling him afterwards there was nothing he could have done because it was a very good header. Two cracking headers by Alex McLeish produced two equally good saves; David Robertson conceded a penalty for the second. John Hewitt came on for Brian Grant at half time, and Jim Bett's penalty and an equaliser by Hewitt earned a thoroughly deserved replay. Young Paul Wright is worthy of special mention. The tie then moved on to Parkhead and another draw, goalless after 120 minutes, leaving a second replay on the Monday — 'we are as well-equipped as anyone for a marathon tie and our supporters can be assured that we have no intention of surrendering the coveted Scottish Cup'. Also, action from the 2-1 win over Dundee: Paul Wright turning to fire the Dons into the lead, substitute Brian Grant nipping in to score the second, and a Peter Weir effort ruled offside. Matchday magazine, 60p, JVC club sponsors. 'Up Front' from Ian Porterfield: very disappointing memories of St Mirren from last season, when they beat the Dons 1-0 home and away at a time when Aberdeen were still in with a chance of the Championship. They stopped the unbeaten league run at Love Street towards the end of February — a bad performance and a bad mistake that cost a goal — and a few weeks later came to Pittodrie and won through a freak goal, a bizarre high ball carried into the roof of the net by the wind, one of the craziest he ever saw. The last two league results, as distinct from the Skol Cup, were disappointing: two weeks earlier against Dundee United the Dons led and seemed to be controlling the game but sat back and were pegged to a draw; last Saturday brought a 2-2 draw at Falkirk after going two bad goals down, a mix-up between two players for the first and a corner Jim Leighton came for and did not get for the second. It was redeemed in the last twenty-five minutes by taking Gary Hackett off, putting Willie Falconer on and pushing John Hewitt to the left and Joe Miller to the right — Falconer scoring the first and Miller bringing the ball down beautifully after a corner to crack in a great goal. 'Up Front' from Ian Porterfield: best wishes to all supporters for health and success in 1988, bracketed with the hope of maintaining a Championship challenge right to the end. The home win over St Mirren in mid-December — the last at Pittodrie before today — completed a run of five successive victories home and away and took the Dons level on points at the top of the Premier Division; since then two away games, against Celtic and Falkirk, have intervened. An attractive local derby today against a Dundee United side who have not had as good a set of results as one would have expected. On the St Mirren game: Jim Bett's early penalty, and Willie Miller's decisive second goal — 'no one would put Willie down as one of our key goalscorers but he has the knack of getting some crucial ones', notably the one a few weeks earlier that beat Rangers at Ibrox; two goals that season, both bringing important victories. 'Up Front' from Ian Porterfield: supporters will feel much the same as the players and himself in welcoming the fact that there is a Scottish Cup semi-final to look forward to at Dundee on 9 April — it is of no real consequence whether the opposition is Dundee or Dundee United, or whether the venue is Tannadice or Dens Park, because at the semi-final stage they all come much the same. In the last couple of games the Dons have scored five goals against Clyde and earned a two-goal win away to Dundee United, a nice psychological boost. Plus points include the goalscoring form of Davie Dodds despite his lengthy enforced absences, the return of Neil Simpson to give valuable contributions, and the steady settling in of Charlie Nicholas, who scored a very good first goal — 'there's no way we have seen the best of him yet but it will come with a little patience and understanding'. Simpson's enthusiasm and determination in the win at Tannadice were impressive. Celtic's win over Rangers has folk concluding the Championship is nearly settled; 'I certainly don't take the view that our part in it is over'. Matchday magazine, 60p, JVC club sponsors, B\u0026amp;Q League. Alex Smith's column: no one can be in any doubt about the importance of getting the home momentum going again today. The visit of Hibs will be a difficult fixture because they are always hard opposition to break down — their last visit to Pittodrie, back in September, ended in a 0-0 draw, which says it all about the size of today's task; they are a well-organised team with some high quality players. Writing before the match at Tannadice, he says without making excuses that circumstances over the festive period were not at all kind to Aberdeen: this area is one of the most densely populated in the country yet, unlike the other major centres, the club did not have a home fixture — a loss of revenue and of continuity both. A two-week break between the 3-1 home win over St Mirren in mid-December and the match at Dundee certainly did not suit. New signing Craig Robertson gave an early lead and the win was comfortable. Losing Alex McLeish to flu on the Friday night when Willie Miller and Jim Bett were already out was a tremendous blow — few teams could safely overcome the loss of a quartet of players worth a couple of million pounds or more, and three of those four are born leaders, so the loss of their influence on other players cannot be over-stated. Matchday magazine, 70p, JVC club sponsors, B\u0026amp;Q League. 'Team Talk with Alex Smith and Jocky Scott'. Smith, writing before the European tie with Rapid Vienna, reports immediate disappointment at the Ibrox result: the worst feature was not performing in the second half having done quite well before the break — instead of building on a promising start they allowed Rangers to take over and dictate. Looking at the league table he suspects it is going to be that kind of season with several clubs making the running; with standards improving all round it will be a very difficult league with some unexpected results. Willem van der Ark is still in the process of adjustment and Charlie Nicholas needs a goal or two to get him going; Ian Cameron ran into injury problems. Jocky Scott: today's visit of Dunfermline will be as challenging a fixture as any — they are in the semi-final of the Skol Cup for the first time, a great motivating force, and have improved steadily and can play some very good football. September is a very challenging month requiring a high ratio of victories: the Skol Cup semi-final against Celtic at Hampden on the Wednesday, the second leg with Rapid a week later, and Premier League fixtures against St Mirren away and Celtic at home. 'From the Dugout' by Steve Paterson: the final home SPL encounter, on the back of a very disappointing performance at Easter Road that ended a run of five matches unbeaten and cost the chance to move above Hibs; three games remain and he would like maximum points from them. A great incentive to win against Thistle, who are looking for their fourth league victory over Aberdeen that season — something no club outside the Old Firm had managed for a few years — and who have a fairly sizeable group of former Pittodrie players in their squad. As this is the last home league match he thanks the fans: 'Duncan Shearer had told me how good the backing was before I arrived here but it is only after experiencing it on a week by week basis I have come to realise just exactly what he meant.' Still to come is the visit of **Southampton on Tuesday 20th as part of the club's centenary celebrations**, three days after the FA Cup Final — it would be fantastic if Gordon Strachan's side came as cup holders. Official programme, £3.00, kick-off 7.45pm. The cover carries a 'REARRANGED MATCH' flash. **Published by the Scottish Football League, not by Aberdeen FC**, and played at Tynecastle rather than at either club's ground. 'Best of Three', by Brown McMaster, President of the Scottish Football League: this is the third time Aberdeen and Dundee United have met at this stage since the two-leg home and away format was abolished over twenty years ago. Two of those semi-finals were played at Dens Park and both were won by the club from out of town, Aberdeen, whilst Dundee United won the semi-final meeting in season 1997\/98 at tonight's venue. Dundee United had the harder route: a spirited Ross County in the second round, then a Lee Wilkie goal to separate them from John Hughes' Falkirk, and a quarter-final against Hamilton Academical that looked easy on paper — but as Craig Levein said, there is no such thing as an easy quarter-final tie, and Billy Reid's First Division leaders battled before going down to a Noel Hunt hat-trick. Aberdeen were exempt in the second round as one of Scotland's four representatives in UEFA competitions; they were drawn at Firhill against Partick Thistle, where things might have been different had Jamie Langfield not saved Mark Roberts' fourteenth-minute penalty, but goals from Derek Young and Andy Considine made them comfortable winners. In the quarter-final they beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4-1 with a rare Barry Nicholson hat-trick. The winners go to Hampden Park on Sunday 16 March to meet the winners of Rangers and Heart of Midlothian. Contents include Road to the Semis (pp6-9), Aberdeen and Dundee United Pen Pics (pp19-21, 25-27), Previous Semi-Finals (p32) and Tonight's Squads (p42). Published by The Scottish Football League.
