Details: Written in 1985 just as Barry McGuigan had won his world featherweight title, award winning sports journalist Eoghan Corrys book told the story how a young boxer from the Irish border had been marketed to an enthusiastic boxing public. Irish and English boxing fans were in need of anyone who could provide them with success. American boxing fans needed a white, preferably ethnic, boxer to challenge the black and Hispanic dominance. The people of Belfast needed a focal point to help them escape the burden of the troubles. McGuigan seemed to be all these things, but in his very hour of victory, this book suggested most of what had been created around him was an illusion and the price everyone had paid for this was a high one. The author persevered with his stories for the Sunday Tribune despite intimidation and threats, being banned from McGuigans fights by his boxing management, to threats of physical violence, Corrys book contradicted the official version of events and predicted (correctly, as it turned out) that McGuigan and his management would end up in opposite corners.
