Details: Product Description Visiting an art gallery or buying a work of art is now part of everyday life, unlike the 1940s. Since then the role of the visual arts in society has undergone major change. Following from volume one, here are more oral histories on Irish art and the infrastructure on which it developed. Twelve interviewees again contribute. The voices of Homan Potterton, author of the best-selling Rathcormick, Hilary Pyle, former Yeats curator at the National Gallery, and John Taylor, owner of Taylor Galleries, emerge with energy, charm and cohesion. Brian Maguire, who started the first artist-in-prison scheme, discusses why art is never a job but a way of changing people s perceptions. Bruce Arnold explains how opening his gallery allowed him to collect pictures and encouraged him to write about Irish art. Belfast gallery owner Jamshid Mirfenderesky asserts why he values artists who try to create something with visual power to be sensed rather than understood and Frances Ruane, advisor to AIB, states what is needed now are young gallery owners to identify artists of the future. Other interviewees include Gordon Lambert an advocate of how business, sports and art can cooperate to everyone s benefit and artists Patrick Scott, Barrie Cooke and John Kelly. Finally, Mary Cloak, director of the Arts Council, gives an insightful look into art in contemporary Ireland. Each interview is structured to get the most from the interviewee resulting in an historically important but humanly engaging compilation.
