Details: Product Description In June and July of 1922, the anti-Treaty forces in the Irish Civil War retreated to their core support base in Munster, when their Dublin city and county positions were taken by the new national army of the Provisional Government of the Free State. But their dream of a defensive line running from Limerick in the north-west to Waterford in the south-east was undermined by four events: the fall of Limerick and Waterford cities, the failure of the republicans to hold Kilmallock in the Civil Wars most intense set piece battle, and the inspired decision of the Free State to land forces by sea in Kerry and Cork, making a mockery of the defensive line adopted by the anti-Treatyites. Despite these setbacks, anti-Treaty forces remained active until 24 May 1923, when IRA Chief-of-Staff Frank Aiken issued an order warning all officers to obey the ceasefire he had instituted or face court martial. The Munster Republic follows the action in North Cork from the start of the Civil War and assesses the factors that enabled the Free State forces to gradually take control of North Cork in the spring and early summer of 1923. About the Author Michael Harrington is a former principal of the national school in Newtownshandrum. He retired in 2005 and returned to UCC to do an MA in Local History. He is well known locally and grew up hearing stories of both the War of Independence and the Civil War, which inspired him to research and write this book.
