The 'Hibernian 79-80' cover carries an action roundel; the cover picture shows Tony Higgins running into a wall of Morton defenders in the drawn league game at Easter Road, Roy Baines going down at his feet with Charlie Brown and Billy McLaren content to leave it to the keeper (Scotsman picture). The main feature, 'Hibs Are Not Alone In Search For A Scorer', notes that Scotland boss Jock Stein was searching for a forward too, and that big English clubs such as Aston Villa and Ipswich had the same problem — while defences are better organised and the accent is more on avoiding defeat, the striker's job is the toughest in football, and goals mean points. Hibs were the only side in Scotland with a single-figure score in the goals-for column, nine matches having produced only four goals; Sandy Clark of Airdrie is reckoned to command a price, with Hibs, Scotland and English clubs all looking around. 'Hibs' Record' gives full line-ups and scorers for the recent Premier League matches against Morton (6 October), Dundee United (13 October) and Rangers (20 October), with an appearances-and-goalscorers table for the squad — Higgins, Rae, Brazil, Callachan, McNamara, Duncan, Hutchinson, McArthur, Campbell, Bremner, J. The cover picture shows Craig Paterson facing up to the rising star of the St Mirren team, Peter Weir, in the midweek home victory (Evening News picture). 'From Manager Willie Ormond': it took a lot of fighting spirit to pull back a goal against an accomplished St Mirren team on the Tuesday and it was gratifying to finish with a win. Since being given charge of the team they have battled furiously in every game; some of the results have been good and the midweek one fell into that category. Sympathy for Bobby Hutchinson, who took a terrible knock on the nose and will bear the effects for some time. The short-term target is to wind up the season with a hat-trick of wins by beating Aberdeen and Partick Thistle — maximum encouragement for next season. Although Hibs took a point from Aberdeen in Ormond's first game, they recovered to take over as championship favourites: Alex Ferguson has his team full of ambition, especially after their draw at Tannadice, and they did extremely well to overtake Celtic — but they will be feeling the tension whereas Hibs' players are under no strain now. The cover picture, an Evening News photograph, shows Jackie McNamara with eyes firmly fixed on the ball, breaking up a Motherwell attack when Hibs scored their first league victory. 'Manager's Comments' by Pat Stanton: anyone who watched Hibs at Ibrox on the Saturday, or saw the highlights on television, will appreciate that things did not go their way — three bad goals lost, a penalty missed and a goal disallowed in the first half, though the simple truth is that no team can throw away goals as they did and still hope to succeed. What delighted him was the manner in which the players suffered one knock after another and kept coming back into the game: once Arthur Duncan took over in goal from the injured Jim McArthur and conceded a goal immediately, some players might have thrown in the towel, but the lads buckled down even more earnestly. Two wins in a fortnight, against Motherwell and then Meadowbank in the Shield, had helped confidence. Today is a difficult one against Aberdeen, but 'my old gaffer Alex Ferguson will be aware that Hibs are just as anxious for the points and it should be an exciting contest'. A Scottish Cup tie, kick-off 3pm, cover price 30p. The cover carries the Scottish Cup 1983 device, the competition sponsored by the Scottish Health Education Group. The cover picture is a duel from the past between Hibs and Aberdeen, Alan Sneddon pursuing Dons centre-forward Mark McGhee — the striker who had beaten Hibs on New Year's Day with a neat double at Pittodrie (Evening News picture). 'Manager's Comments' by Pat Stanton: Hibs were beaten 4-1 by Celtic the previous week but his views did not coincide with some of the verdicts over the weekend — Hibs contributed largely to the result by giving away silly goals, and there is no other way to describe some of the rash mistakes Celtic pounced upon, but it was by no means a one-sided affair. Hibs had some excellent chances and simply didn't take them, and that is a problem they have had to live with throughout the season. Celtic's third goal killed the game, but an early goal conceded at the start of each half has been the pattern. Ferguson has the resources to ring the changes without noticing absentees, and the Dons are challenging on three fronts; Hibs' home record is not so hot with all these draws, yet this is a one-off, sudden-death affair in which anything can happen. Gary Murray and Ralph Callachan are fit to play. 'Blackley's Back-Chat' from manager John Blackley: the last few weeks have been an important spell for the club and the players have shown great character in the last three league matches, picking up five points. He is much happier with the defence, which now has a balanced look about it — he has always said that if they could close the back door there wouldn't be much wrong. The match against Dundee United was a difficult one but they worked really hard, created a fair number of chances and took a good point; it also saw the return of Ralph Callachan in a first-team jersey, a very experienced player who gives them another option, and it is just sad that he missed the first part of the season. The cover is a flashback to the Skol Cup final clash between Hibs and Aberdeen, with Gordon Chisholm causing a worrying moment for the Dons' defence. 'Blackley's Back-Chat' from manager John Blackley: if there is one thing to take out of the previous week's cup-tie, it is that Hibs showed character to keep plugging away until the very last minute — it is difficult to come back from a penalty miss when things aren't going your way, as heads can go down, but they kept playing away until they got the break right at the death. Basic things didn't go right against Ayr and the passing and control were not up to the standards they had come to expect in recent months; they dug in at the crucial stage and it was a tough tie to get through. It was important they did, as they now have a tie against Celtic and a chance to take their interest in the Scottish Cup a stage further. That said, the league is the number one priority and they are looking to get something from today's match against the league champions. Aberdeen have always played well against Hibs. Four extremely difficult matches are coming up — Aberdeen, Dundee United, Rangers and then Celtic — and it is crucial to stay as free from injuries and suspensions as possible. The front cover pictures Mickey Weir shooting past in the last home game. 'Back-Chat from Alex Miller': in the last home game against Clydebank, Hibs treated the first half as a practice match and never got going, though the second-half performance was much better and the goals were all worked and taken very well. The cup-tie was a different story — they never started in the first half and lost an early goal, Clydebank sat back to defend the slender lead, and it was only in the second half that Hibs got in about them; the second-half performance merited a draw and everyone was disappointed by the cup exit. Last Saturday at Ibrox they settled down quickly and scored an early goal with a well-worked move; in the second half they were very much on the defensive but showed fighting spirit to hold on to their share of the points, and considering the form Rangers had been showing he was very pleased with the point won. Today Hibs entertain Aberdeen, and a continuation of their form at Ibrox and in both second halves against Clydebank should guarantee an entertaining game for the fans. The front cover pictures Eddie May tantalising the Falkirk defence. 'Backchat from Alex Miller': he was pleased that Hibs continued their recent run by taking two points against Falkirk, and felt they deserved more than the one goal, having created chances in the first half especially and never really taken the opportunities that came their way. But he asks the fans to be patient when Hibs are playing a team that defends in depth — it is very difficult to break them down and there is not a lot of space to play into, and big scorelines in the Premier League are rare. He is just happy that the momentum is being kept going. Aberdeen promise to be difficult opponents: they have still to lose a league match and have strengthened their squad considerably since last season, and they will be out to keep their recent good run going, though Hibs will hopefully bring a stop to their unbeaten record. Cover price 60p, a Match Magazine. Match sponsors The Frank Graham Company Ltd in association with Edina Furnishings; Fine Fare League masthead. The front cover shows Hearts defender Craig Levein clearing a corner during the previous week's Edinburgh derby. 'Backchat from Alex Miller': defences were well on top during the derby with Hearts and he thinks both sets of supporters went home fairly happy after what was one of the better city matches. Andy Goram made some very useful saves in the first half and Graham Mitchell did well again; the defence has a settled look about it just now. People say Hibs are not scoring goals, but it is also true that they are not giving much away at the back and have only lost one goal in the last four matches. There is plenty of competition for places, with Tommy McIntyre keeping everyone on their toes as he can come in and play anywhere, and Callum Milne also doing very well in the Reserves, so no one is guaranteed a place. Hibs created a fair number of chances against Hearts and had a goal disallowed, and in the second half particularly they were pushing forward. Today's match will attract another big crowd, and Aberdeen will provide strong opposition with the inclusion of Charlie Nicholas likely to give them a lift. Chairman D. F. Duff; managing director J.
