Aberdeen FC 'The Don', Season 1985/86: Aberdeen v Clydebank, 5 October 1985 matchday programme — Fine Fare League; Alex Ferguson on the 3-0 win at Ibrox, Billy Stark, Alex McLeish, John Hewitt
Official matchday programme for the Fine Fare League Premier Division: Aberdeen v Clydebank, 5 October 1985, at Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen. Official matchday magazine, 50p. Alex Ferguson's column is a remarkable document. Looking back to the 3-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox the previous Saturday, 'I can only say in all honesty that I have never been so pleased in my whole career to see a match end and get on the way back home. That reaction has nothing to do with the scoreline.' He had a genuine fear for people's safety as the widely-publicised problems developed, and it was a relief to get it all over and behind us; he has no intention of being drawn into controversy or of replying to the comments made afterwards by Jock Wallace, preferring to concentrate on the impressive set of results being put together. Once the first goal came through Alex McLeish's header after about half an hour they were never going to let go; a second by Billy Stark more or less settled it, and although a third came through John Hewitt in the second half they had almost stopped playing by then because of the pitch invasion. The best display of the season was perhaps the 1-0 win over Dundee United in the Skol Cup. Points dropped at home to Motherwell and St Mirren should be motivation enough to get attention back on the defence of the Premier Division title before the midweek switch to the European scene. Cover caption: Billy Stark becomes the Dons' leading scorer with his seventh goal of the season in the 3-0 win at Ibrox; the former St Mirren player has scored important goals in the League, Skol Cup and European Cup.
