Official matchday programme for the Fine Fare League Premier Division: Aberdeen v Dundee United, 2 January 1988, at Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen. Matchday magazine, 60p, JVC club sponsors. 'Up Front' from Ian Porterfield: best wishes to all supporters for health and success in 1988, bracketed with the hope of maintaining a Championship challenge right to the end. The home win over St Mirren in mid-December — the last at Pittodrie before today — completed a run of five successive victories home and away and took the Dons level on points at the top of the Premier Division; since then two away games, against Celtic and Falkirk, have intervened. An attractive local derby today against a Dundee United side who have not had as good a set of results as one would have expected. On the St Mirren game: Jim Bett's early penalty, and Willie Miller's decisive second goal — 'no one would put Willie down as one of our key goalscorers but he has the knack of getting some crucial ones', notably the one a few weeks earlier that beat Rangers at Ibrox; two goals that season, both bringing important victories. A fine collection of defenders in Jim Leighton, Stewart McKimmie, Alex McLeish, Miller and David Robertson, now fit again — at times that season Liverpool were the only team in Scotland or England with a better defensive record.
