JOHN CAULFIELD — who had won the double with Cork the previous season — writes a serious argument about the structure of Irish football: 'One of the biggest challenges for ourselves and Dundalk is the fact that we both regularly lose players to the English leagues. Part of our desire to progress the league involves making progress in Europe but, when you are losing players for relatively small money on an annual basis, it makes it more and more difficult to build year-on-year. If you look back to 2016, when Dundalk reached the group stages and we reached the Third Qualifying Round, both teams lost a number of players over the next twelve months that made building on that success very difficult.'

On television: 'if you look back to the summer just gone, we had four clubs in Europe and none of their First Round games were covered on TV. We have a lot of coverage of the league at the start of the season and again now coming into the final weeks, but if we are going to build our brand, then we need coverage right throughout the season.'
