Ennis & County Clare: A Pictorial Guide – a free illustrated fold-out tourist map in the Pictorial Maps series, illustrated and published by Condor Publishers (Ireland) Ltd of Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, in conjunction with Shannon Development. The centrepiece is a hand-drawn, watercolour-style bird's-eye map of Ennis Town – an artistic impression rather than an Ordnance Survey plan – picking out the streets, lanes, river and railway of the county town, with a key marking places of interest, parking, the tourist information centre and toilets. Panels describe the sights of Ennis, among them Ennis Friary and the O'Connell Monument on the site where Daniel O'Connell was declared MP for Clare in 1828, and the cover shows photographs of a castle demesne, a Burren village, a thatched folk-park scene and the Cliffs of Moher. Around the map are advertisements for Ennis businesses of the day – Brandon's Bar & Restaurant, Numero Uno Pizzeria on Barrack Street, Paudie Mac's bar and restaurant, O'Brien's Irish Sandwich Bar and a gift shop on Lower Market Street – a snapshot of the town's shops, pubs and restaurants in the early 2000s (an O'Brien's advertisement cites a 2003 award). Ennis, on the River Fergus, is the county town of Clare and the gateway to the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty and Shannon Airport; maps like this were handed out free at tourist offices, hotels and shops, and few survive. The cover still carries its FREE flash. Folded size approx. 12 x 23 cm; opens out to a multi-panel sheet printed in colour on both sides. THEMES: Ennis, County Clare, Irish tourism ephemera, pictorial maps, town maps, Shannon region, River Fergus, Daniel O'Connell, Burren, 2000s Ireland, local history.
