The match was one of France's autumn internationals of 1998, the year in which Jean-Claude Skrela's side won the Five Nations Grand Slam, and came as Argentina built towards the 1999 Rugby World Cup, where the Pumas went on to reach the quarter-finals for the first time. Matches between the two nations have a long and often fiercely contested history, and the programme is a souvenir of the Pumas' November 1998 visit to France. Nantes and the Stade de la Beaujoire, built for the 1984 European football championship and better known as the home of FC Nantes, have only occasionally hosted the French national rugby team, which makes this a less common French test programme than those for the Parc des Princes and the Stade de France.
