Snippets inside: the trophy is a replica of an old Celtic Cross from the Rock of Cashel, commissioned by the then Archbishop of Cashel, Most Rev. Dr Morris, and first presented at the 1987 final in which Tipperary beat Dublin at Croke Park, captained by P. J. Ryan. Galway's fourth Under-21 title, in 1986 against Wexford at Thurles, brought a score of 1-14 in which nine players contributed, from goalkeeper to full forward. Offaly had contested only one All-Ireland Under-21 final to that point - 1989, when Tipperary won 4-10 to 3-11 before a record crowd of 35,000 at Portlaoise - and the full 1989 lineout is given, naming John Troy, Brian Whelahan, Damian Geoghegan, Brian Hennessy, Roy Mannion, Brendan Kelly, Gary Cahill, Adrian Cahill, Johnny Pilkington, Billie Dooley, Daithí Regan, Johnny Dooley, Michael Duignan, Ronnie Byrne and captain Declan Pilkington.
