Irish Arts Review magazine: Annual Price Guide to Irish Art 2004 – the definitive guide to Irish paintings sold at auction in 2004; Old Masters and New Mediums by Ciaran MacGonigal
Irish Arts Review Annual Price Guide to Irish Art 2004 – 'the definitive guide to Irish paintings sold at auction in 2004'.
Opens with Ciaran MacGonigal's review of the year, 'Old Masters and New Mediums in 2004', which credits Leo Smith of the Dawson Gallery and Brian Coyle of James Adam & Co. with building the market for Irish art at auction from the late 1950s.
Artists singled out as having a good year include Louis le Brocquy, Robert Ballagh, Donald Teskey, Peter Curling, Pauline Bewick and Cecil Maguire. Among earlier masters, Seán Keating, Paul Henry, George Campbell, Arthur Armstrong, Daniel O'Neill, Tony O'Malley, Patrick Hennessy and Charles Brady all did well. Brady's My Palette Table, sold at de Veres for €34,000, illustrates the review. Several important works by Jack B. Yeats struggled on the day.
The listings follow artist by artist, each entry giving title, medium, size, saleroom, sale date and price realised. Illustrated in colour.
A practical reference for collectors, dealers, valuers and auctioneers, and a record of the Irish art market in the boom years.
