Irish Arts Review magazine special edition, 2006: 175 – the 175th anniversary of the Office of Public Works (OPW); Irish heritage, historic houses, castles and gardens
175 – a special edition of the Irish Arts Review celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Office of Public Works (OPW), 1831–2006.
The OPW looks after Ireland's national monuments, historic properties, gardens and State buildings. This commemorative edition surveys that stewardship: historic houses and gardens restored, castles conserved, and ruins kept as ruins. Properties discussed include:
• the restored gardens at Woodstock, Inistioge, Co Kilkenny
• Tyrone House, Co Galway
• Johnstown Castle and its demesne, Co Wexford
• Portumna Castle, Co Galway
• Collins Barracks, Dublin
The inside cover reproduces a detail of Darren Murray's painting Chamonix, Mont Blanc (2004). Illustrated throughout in colour.
For anyone interested in Irish heritage, conservation, historic architecture, country houses and gardens, and the State's part in preserving them.
