Details: The Great Blasket is the largest of a group of small islands lying off the South West coast of Ireland. It is now deserted but was inhabited until recently bu a small Gaelic-speaking fishing community. There was no shop, pub, post-office, police, doctor or priest and it was often cut off from the mainland by bad weather. Communities of this type, based on kinship and co-operation are still to be found but what made Blasket unique was that during the past half-century natives of the island have produced more than a dozen books. Several of them have been translated into English and one "Twenty Years a-Growing" has become world-famous. In this book an attempt is made to explain how these seemingly backward Islanders came to make so distinguished a contribution to contemporary literature. (Stallanbooks)
