Italian for Beginners by Luisa Rapaccini, published by British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC UK) in 1960. 'Italian for Beginners', the BBC pamphlet accompanying a series of forty radio broadcasts in Network Three for listeners with no previous knowledge of the language, starting 3 October, Mondays 7.10-7.30 p.m., repeated Fridays 6.40-7.00 p.m. As the introduction explains, the programmes take the form of simple lessons intended not only for those who wish to visit Italy for her scenery and culture but for those who want to make personal contact with her people; the pamphlet is a necessary adjunct to the lessons, containing the grammar and vocabulary they cover, with explanations in English but as little Italian as possible spoken in the lessons themselves so that the ear becomes accustomed to it. The lessons throughout the series were given by Luisa Rapaccini, author of 'Parlo Italiano', published by Le Monnier, Florence. Forty lessons across 80 pages, with a full grammatical index covering adjectives, adverbs, the article, conjunctions, nouns, numbers, prepositions, pronouns, pronunciation, the uses of si, and the verbs — indicative, conditional, subjunctive and imperative, with the regular conjugations, irregular verbs, reflexives and compound tenses. Published by the British Broadcasting Corporation, 35 Marylebone High Street, London W.1; printed in England by Edson (Printers) Ltd., Leavesden, Watford, Herts; publication no. 4220/2. The photograph of Perugia, Umbria, on the front cover is by J. Allan Cash. Priced 4s. An oblong-format pamphlet in printed wrappers. Undated; pre-decimal, and Network Three dates it to the early 1960s.
