He is a father figure for all of those who sought sporting excellence in Ireland over the last 50 years.\nHe was the inspirational mind behind the creation of Kevin Heffernan’s amazing Dublin team of the 70s, which won three All-Ireland titles and changed the face of Gaelic football forever.\nA former All-Ireland winner with Dublin in 1963, Whelan also managed Dublin himself in the 90s. However, his brilliant mind has helped teams throughout the GAA to gain ultimate success. He also coached Dundalk FC to a League of Ireland title.\nA fitter by professional, the Clanna Gael and St Vincent’s man interrupted his own career and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1969. He returned home with a Masters in Sports Science.
