No Complaints: A Memoir of Life in Rural Ireland and in the Irish Public Service, by Maurice O'Connell, edited by J. Anthony Gaughan. First published in 2020 by Kingdom Books, 56 Newtownpark Avenue, Blackrock, Co. Dublin (ISBN 978-1-9164764-3-1); designed and typeset in 11.5 on 15 point Aldus by Susan Waine; printed in Ireland. Hardback in dust jacket. Maurice O'Connell was born in Moyvane, near Listowel, Co. Kerry, on 5 May 1936, and educated at St Michael's College, Listowel, St Brendan's College, Killarney, St Patrick's College, Maynooth, and University College Dublin. As a civil servant he worked mostly in the Department of Finance, rising to become second secretary in charge of its finance division, and he was Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland from 1994 to 2002 – the years of the Celtic Tiger and of Ireland's entry into the euro. He died on 1 April 2019; the memoir, published the following year, is dedicated to past and present members of the Irish public service. In five chapters the memoir follows his life from a north Kerry childhood to a long career at the heart of Irish economic policy; the appendices give a list of his public appointments, his Irish Times obituary and notes on the contributors. The editor, J. Anthony Gaughan, is the historian whose many books include Listowel and Its Vicinity and biographies of figures in modern Irish history. Front jacket: a smiling portrait of the author; back jacket: biographical note. A first-hand account of the Irish public service from the 1950s to the 2000s, of interest to readers of Irish political and economic history, central banking and Kerry biography. THEMES: Irish public service, Department of Finance, Central Bank of Ireland, Irish economic history, rural Ireland, north Kerry, Listowel, memoir.
