Details: What is the purpose of this book? Obviously it is not addressed primarily to those who are habitual readers of Irish, though one might hope that familiar texts might be approached freshly in the light of personal insights from commentators, all of them involved in the creation or appreciation of literature. When we set about making the series, we had in mind an audience whose attitudes to Irish are neither hostile nor committedly enthusiastic, an audience part of which never arrived at an approach towards Gaelic literature other than in the most primitive critical terms, and part of which might never think of reading a book in Irish with the same high seriousness as they would bring to a book in English or any other European language. It may be hard for many dedicated teachers to recognise the situation whereby even pupils fluent in Irish may have an almost apologetic attitude towards literature in Irish. We hope that this book may help to defrost this kind of literary indifferentism.John Jordan
