Willie Miller is the marathon man of the Scottish Cup, only 180 minutes from making history, a smooth sweeper who has held the trophy aloft for three successive seasons; Alex Ferguson admits he was not too certain of Miller's pedigree when he took over as Pittodrie supremo in 1978, replacing Billy McNeill - 'I didn't like the way he ran. But I hasten to add I have since changed my mind about the player. Totally!' Paul Hegarty was bought from Hamilton for GBP30,000 eleven years earlier and arrived at Tannadice as a forward before Jim McLean shifted him to central defence; two League Cup medals and a Premier Division championship badge have followed, and Dundee United, who came to life in 1923, had never won the Scottish Cup.
