Scottish League Cup (Skol Cup) final programme, Season 1987/88: Rangers v Aberdeen, Hampden Park, 25 October 1987 — the 42nd League Cup final at Hampden; Rangers v Aberdeen
Official programme for the Skol Cup final, sponsored by Alloa Brewery Company Ltd: Rangers v Aberdeen, at Hampden Park, Glasgow, 25 October 1987. Official programme, GBP1, kick-off 3.00 p.m. 'Welcome...' by Ian R. G. Gellatly, C.A., President of The Scottish Football League: this is the 42nd League/Skol Cup final, and it is particularly appropriate that it should be contested between Rangers and Aberdeen, since both clubs had the honour of contesting the inaugural League Cup final in season 1946/47, when the Ibrox club won 4-0. The two have monopolised the competition since Skol Lager began their association with the League in 1984, and both have indicated their ambitions by signing top-class players from clubs throughout Britain. Aggregate attendance for the 37 ties this season will exceed 375,000, a rise of more than 20 per cent; 127 goals came from 36 ties, an average of 3.5 a game, with GBP12,665 paid out in incentives. This is the third occasion on which Rangers and Aberdeen have contested this final, the Ibrox club having won both previous encounters. 'Take Care And Enjoy A Great Final' by Jim Farry, Secretary of The Scottish Football League, urges precautions against pickpockets and thanks the officials and staff of Queen's Park F.C. 'The Referee - Bob Valentine' by Bobby Maitland of the Scottish Daily Express: Scotland's most experienced and longest-serving referee takes charge of this final for the fourth time in seven years. The 46-year-old Dundonian handled his first final, Rangers against Celtic, in 1977; his travels have taken him to more than thirty countries, including the 1982 World Cup finals, the Olympic Games and a UEFA Cup final.
