The line engravings of the city centre streets give a unique picture of the shop fronts and buildings, exactly as they were before the major changes of the Victorian ear and the destruction of modern times. Looking at these fine illustrations, together with the directory entries, it is possible to learn a great amount of detail about the trade, commerce and life of the city. Many lively advertisements help to complete a social portrait of a Dublin which has vanished almost completely. The introduction is by Professor Kevin B.
