The Mansion House Dublin – souvenir booklet with the compliments of the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Tomás MacGiolla (1993-94): history, rooms and treasures of the Lord Mayor's residence
The Mansion House, Dublin – the illustrated souvenir booklet presented to visitors to the official residence of the Lord Mayor of Dublin, with a page bearing the printed compliments and facsimile signature of the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Tomás MacGiolla, shown in his robes and chain of office. Tomás Mac Giolla, the former president of the Workers' Party and TD for Dublin West, served as Lord Mayor in 1993–94, which dates this issue of the booklet. The landscape cover shows the front of the Mansion House on Dawson Street under a blue sky, with the arms of the city. Inside, the text welcomes visitors to Dublin and to the Mansion House, noting that the city government of Dublin has existed since 1172 and can boast of 800 years of welcoming, and that like Guinness and James Joyce's writings the Mansion House has earned a reputation for quality; the booklet sets out to answer the questions visitors most often ask about the house and its contents. The history section tells how, on 25 April 1715, Dublin Corporation agreed to buy the house from Joshua Dawson, after whom the street is named, for £3,500, a yearly rent of forty shillings and a loaf of double-refined sugar weighing six pounds at Christmas, and how Dublin could boast a mayoral residence before London; later pages cover the 19th-century portico, the great public functions held there, the annual City Ball on St Stephen's Night, the truce of July 1921, and the city motto Obedientia Civium Urbis Felicitas. Colour photographs include the Waterford Crystal Millennium Bowl and the Lady Mayoress's parlour. About 12 pages, landscape, 31 x 22 cm.
