Aberdeen FC 'The Don', Season 1988/89: Aberdeen v Hibernian, 7 January 1989 matchday programme — B&Q League; Alex Smith, Willie Miller, Alex McLeish, Jim Bett, Craig Robertson
Official matchday programme for the B&Q League Premier Division: Aberdeen v Hibernian, 7 January 1989, at Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen. Matchday magazine, 60p, JVC club sponsors, B&Q League. Alex Smith's column: no one can be in any doubt about the importance of getting the home momentum going again today. The visit of Hibs will be a difficult fixture because they are always hard opposition to break down — their last visit to Pittodrie, back in September, ended in a 0-0 draw, which says it all about the size of today's task; they are a well-organised team with some high quality players. Writing before the match at Tannadice, he says without making excuses that circumstances over the festive period were not at all kind to Aberdeen: this area is one of the most densely populated in the country yet, unlike the other major centres, the club did not have a home fixture — a loss of revenue and of continuity both. A two-week break between the 3-1 home win over St Mirren in mid-December and the match at Dundee certainly did not suit. New signing Craig Robertson gave an early lead and the win was comfortable. Losing Alex McLeish to flu on the Friday night when Willie Miller and Jim Bett were already out was a tremendous blow — few teams could safely overcome the loss of a quartet of players worth a couple of million pounds or more, and three of those four are born leaders, so the loss of their influence on other players cannot be over-stated.
