A European tie, and the first issue of the season — Derry had won the League of Ireland championship in 1996/97 and entered the Champions League as Irish champions.

Chairman Paul Diamond's message is the heart of the issue. He welcomes NK Maribor Branik and their coach Bojan Prasnikar, who had been in Dublin the week before to watch Derry play Celtic in the Irish International Quadrangular Tournament and was impressed by the win over them. Diamond rates the performances against Celtic and Newcastle United among the greatest in the club's history, and notes that Derry City were the first Irish club to be televised live on Sky and the first to bring European Cup football to the Brandywell, in 1989, with RTÉ covering the tie against Benfica. He thanks the FAI for staging the tournament and inviting Bohemians and Shelbourne, notes Felix Healy's new signings, and introduces a new continental-style strip and a new club crest.
