A cup final, with Dundalk a goal down from the first leg. 'Nixon's Notes' by Ray Nixon supplies the history: Cork City's only previous League Cup came in 1988 against Shamrock Rovers at Turner's Cross; Dundalk first won the trophy in 1978 against the now-defunct Cork Albert, both legs drawn 2-2, TOMMY McCONVILLE putting Dundalk 4-3 up in the shoot-out before a Cork player named Noel O'Mahony missed. He notes Pat Morley's late winner in 'an ill-tempered first leg at Bishopstown' and that Dundalk fans were 'very bitter' about a penalty denied in a recent league defeat by Cork.

'Dermot Keely Writes' is the page to read. The manager is pleased to be only 1-0 down — 'if anyone had said beforehand that we would carry a one-nil defeat into the final leg at Oriel Park I would have been quite happy' — defends John Coady's harsh dismissal, then spends several paragraphs answering a local paper's criticism of TONY LOUGHLAN by quoting a rival paper's match rating back at it, and defends signing the veteran MICK BYRNE: 'when a player of his standard becomes available, regardless of age…'
