Dundalk arrive having just had a remarkable run ended. The editorial explains that they had been chasing the all-time record for consecutive league wins — fifteen, set by Bohemians back in 1923/24 — until a late defeat by Shamrock Rovers days earlier, and warns that they 'come here a wounded animal'. It also notes, with some feeling, that the record Dundalk were chasing was one Limerick themselves had eyed in 2016, when they opened the First Division campaign with twelve straight victories.

For Limerick the mood is more anxious: a relegation play-off is in view, and manager TOMMY BARRETT's side had steadied themselves the week before with an Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup win over Cabinteely, CONNOR ELLIS scoring his first goal at the Markets Field. The cup quarter-final follows at the same ground the next Friday night. There is also a rueful account of a 2-2 home draw with Drogheda United, the visitors equalising on 89 minutes, and of a Ross Mann leveller at Oriel Park after a contentious penalty.
