The exhibition was arranged by the architect Michael Scott and by Liam Miller of the Dolmen Press; the arrangement of the panels and models in the exhibition was by Hans Schaufelberger of Michael Scott and Partners, and the assistance of An Chomhairle Ealaíon is acknowledged. The woodcut mask reproduced on the cover (catalogue no. 39) appears by permission of Mr Edward Craig. An introductory essay traces stage design at the Abbey from the founding of the Irish National Theatre Society in 1899: the break from nineteenth-century painted scenery, Gordon Craig's production of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and W. B. Yeats's admiration for it, Adolphe Appia's 1899 treatise on stage lighting, and the influence of Dion Boucicault on the realist dramatists who followed — Shaw, Synge and O'Casey. The catalogue proper lists 127 exhibits — drawings, designs, settings, models and posters. Entries include Peadar Lamb's watercolour settings for An Béal Bocht (Peacock Theatre, July 1967); an architectural model of the Old Abbey Theatre as reconstructed in 1904 to Joseph Holloway's design, at four feet to one inch, showing foyer, auditorium, stage and dressing rooms; and 1967 poster designs — A Long Day's Journey into Night in gouache by Arthur Armstrong, The Loves of Cass Maguire in gouache by George Campbell, and Red Roses for Me in gouache by Gerard Dillon.
