Thirty Years of The Bridge: An Anthology of Kilcullen Memories (2000) – Co. Kildare local history 1970s-2000: Dún Ailinne, New Abbey, Gilltown, Castlemartin, Gordon Bennett Race
Thirty Years of The Bridge: An Anthology of Kilcullen Memories, published by The Bridge and Kilcullen Heritage Group in 2000 and printed in Naas by the Leinster Leader Ltd (original price IR£12.50) – a 400-page social history of the Co. Kildare town of Kilcullen in the twentieth century, drawn from the first thirty years of The Bridge, its monthly community magazine. As the back cover explains, The Bridge has recorded not only local history but history in the making – the major events, whether sporting, cultural or social, and the people profiled in each monthly issue – and the anthology gathers the most important of its articles, above all the 'Baile seo 'Ghainne' series, to safeguard them for future generations. The publishers present it not as the definitive history of Kilcullen but as a social history of the community across the twentieth century. Arranged by decade – The Seventies (page 9), The Eighties (154), The Nineties (255) and The 00s So Far (390) – the contents run to hundreds of pieces: Our Town and its People, Self-help Housing, the Sisters in our Midst, Medieval Church Restored, Gilltown and its Past, Castlemartin, Kilcullen or Carnalway?, the Tapley Stone, Antiquities of New Abbey, Dún Ailinne and the Knockaulin excavations, the Canoe Club, the Town Hall Cinema, the Great Race of 2 July 1903 (the Gordon Bennett), Kilcullen Lord Mayor Elections, the Ball Alley, Scoil Bhríde, Sir Roland FitzEustace, Brannockstown, Harristown, the GAA Centenary, Kilcullen Community Development and the Millennium, with profiles of local characters throughout. Produced with the assistance of the Kildare Leader II company, KELT, the Department of Agriculture and Food and the EU, and of the Kilcullen Development Association. 400 pages, about 21.5 x 30 cm, paperback, illustrated with photographs. THEMES: Kilcullen, Co. Kildare local history, Irish social history, Dún Ailinne, New Abbey, Gordon Bennett Race 1903, community magazines, rural Ireland twentieth century.
